Dominican Republic Wedding Venues Near Cana Bay: Legal Settings, Recognition at Home and a Base at Poseidonia

Published October 28, 2026 8 min read

Choosing where to marry in the Dominican Republic is two decisions that look like one. The first is the setting: a public beach, a historic church, a garden or a terrace. The second is the legal act, which only certain people can perform and which has to stand up later, at home and, for couples who buy here, in front of a notary. This guide takes the view from Poseidonia in Cana Bay, with the golf course on site and the beach about 5 minutes away, and works through both decisions: which ceremonies make you married, how the marriage is recognised back home, what to settle before the wedding if you will own a home together, and which settings within reach of Cana Bay suit which kind of day.

Which kind of ceremony actually makes you married?

Venues are easy to find; the legal part is narrower. Two foreigners, even if neither lives in the Dominican Republic, may marry in a civil ceremony before an Oficial del Estado Civil, the civil registry officer. The ceremony is held in Spanish with two witnesses, and published guides list the usual documents for each foreign partner: a passport, a long-form birth certificate and a sworn statement of single status, apostilled where they were issued and translated into Spanish. The registry's published tariff, as two Dominican sources reproduce it, is RD$20,000 when both partners are foreigners living abroad, whether the officer marries you in the office or travels to another place.

The other legal route is a Catholic wedding. A legal-information guide says the officiating priest sends the documentation to the civil registry within three working days of the service, which is what gives the church ceremony its civil effect; the parish sets its own paperwork on top of the civil list. Anything else, a ceremony led by a friend or a celebrant on the sand, is a celebration rather than the legal act, so plan for the legal ceremony to happen somewhere: here before a registry officer, or at home before or after the trip. One Dominican law firm advises couples to start gathering documents at least six months ahead.

Will the marriage be recognised back home?

After a civil wedding the registry issues the Dominican marriage certificate, and for use abroad it is apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which authenticates the registry's signature. What happens next depends on the passport. The Government of Canada's travel advice, updated in September 2026, says marriages legally performed in a foreign country are usually valid in Canada and do not need to be registered there. In the United States there is no single national answer: the State Department points couples to the attorney general's office of the state where they live to confirm recognition and the documents it expects.

Other countries ask for more. The Netherlands, for instance, requires residents to register a foreign marriage with their municipality, and many offices want a certified translation of the Spanish certificate. The practical rule is to ask your own registry office what it will want before the wedding, not after, because a missing translation or apostille is far easier to arrange while you are still in the Dominican Republic.

Marrying and buying a home: settle the property question first

For a couple who will own a residence at Poseidonia, the wedding date has a legal side that most venue guides never mention. The Dominican Republic's private international law, Ley 544-14, says in Article 43 that property relations between spouses follow the law that governs their personal relations unless they agree otherwise, and in Article 44 that, before marrying, the spouses may choose in writing which law applies from among the laws of the countries of either spouse's nationality or domicile. That choice belongs before the ceremony, not at the closing table.

A separate article of the same law, Article 76, says ownership of real property is governed by the law of the country where it is located, so the residence itself remains under Dominican law whatever the couple's home country. Whether to make a written choice, and which law to pick, is a question for an attorney in the Dominican Republic and one at home, asked together. What this page can say is simply when to ask: in the months of paperwork before the wedding, while the documents are being apostilled anyway.

Which settings near Cana Bay suit which kind of wedding?

For a beach ceremony, Playa Macao is the obvious candidate. The tourism ministry calls it the principal public beach of the Punta Cana and Uvero Alto coast, it charges no entrance fee, and it lies roughly 4.7 miles up the coast from Poseidonia in a straight line. In 2022 the ministry finished a new access road and public parking with 86 car spaces and 14 coach bays, which matters when guests arrive by bus. The same public status sets the limits: in August 2026 the ministry restated that hotels and clubs may manage their own facilities but cannot appropriate the beach or block legal access to it, so a beach wedding shares the sand. Buggy and ATV excursions stop at Macao in the middle of the day, and on Sundays it fills with Dominican families, so a weekday morning or late afternoon is the quieter choice.

For a church wedding, the historic setting is the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, about 129 miles from Poseidonia by road. That is a wedding weekend with a night in the capital rather than an afternoon outing, and the parish, not the venue, decides the dates and the paperwork. For a garden or terrace reception closer to home, ask each club or restaurant in the Cana Bay area directly what it hosts and on what terms; this page names none, and makes no claim that events can be held at Poseidonia itself.

Using a home at Poseidonia as the wedding base

A wedding week is mostly logistics, and a home base helps. Poseidonia is planned as 1,319 fully furnished residences in Cana Bay, with the golf resort on site, the beach about 5 minutes away, downtown Punta Cana about 17 minutes and Punta Cana International Airport about 25 minutes by car. For an owner, that means the couple's own residence can be where the documents are kept, the outfits are pressed and the family gathers the night before, while arriving guests have a short transfer from the airport.

Plan the week backwards from the legal ceremony. Book the registry officer or the parish first, because their dates fix everything else; then the setting; then the reception. Keep the apostilled originals and their translations together in one folder at the residence, carry copies on the day, and leave a free day after the wedding for the marriage certificate and its apostille before anyone flies home.

Common questions

Can two foreigners legally marry in the Dominican Republic?
Yes. Two foreigners, even if neither is a resident, can marry in a civil ceremony before a civil registry officer. The ceremony is in Spanish with two witnesses, and the documents must be apostilled and translated into Spanish.
Is a beach wedding in Punta Cana legally binding?
Only if a civil registry officer performs it. A symbolic ceremony on the sand is a celebration; the legal marriage then has to take place before an officer here or at home.
Is a Dominican marriage valid in Canada or the United States?
Canada says marriages legally performed abroad are usually valid there without Canadian registration. In the United States recognition is decided by each state, and the State Department points couples to their state attorney general.
How far is Playa Macao from Poseidonia?
About 4.7 miles up the coast in a straight line. It is a public beach with no entrance fee and public parking built in 2022.
