Baseball in the Dominican Republic, month by month, for an owner at Poseidonia in Cana Bay
Baseball in the Dominican Republic is not a season, it is a calendar. The professional league fills the winter, the academies of the major-league clubs play through the summer, and in February the champion carries the flag abroad. For an owner at Poseidonia in Cana Bay, that means there is a game worth knowing about in almost any month you are on the island. This guide follows the year from the east coast: why the country matters so much to the sport, how far the winter ballparks are from Poseidonia by road, what happens at the academies in summer, and where the Caribbean Series goes next.
Why the Dominican Republic matters so much to baseball
Major League Baseball counts its foreign-born players every spring, and the Dominican Republic has topped that count every single year since the league began publishing it in 1995. On Opening Day 2026, 249 players born outside the 50 states appeared on rosters and inactive lists, from 16 countries and territories, and 93 of them were Dominican.
That is why the game here feels different from a visit to a stadium at home. The man pitching for a winter-league club in December may have been in a major-league bullpen in September, and the teenager taking batting practice at a summer complex may be on a big-league card in a few years. For an owner, the sport is also an easy way into Dominican life: ask a taxi driver, a groundskeeper or a waiter which club they follow, and you will rarely get a short answer.
Winter: the league's ballparks, measured from Poseidonia
The professional league plays from autumn into winter, the months when most owners are on the island. Cana Bay has no professional ballpark, so a game is a drive west. We measured three of the league's grounds by road from Poseidonia's map pin:
- La Romana, Estadio Francisco Micheli: about 64 miles. Home of Toros del Este and the natural first trip.
- San Pedro de Macorís, Estadio Tetelo Vargas: about 85 miles. Home of Estrellas Orientales.
- Santo Domingo, Estadio Quisqueya: about 131 miles. The capital's ballpark, shared by two clubs, Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido.
These are road distances, not drive times, and evening games finish late. La Romana works as an outing with a driver; a game in the capital is better planned as an overnight stay, ideally on a night when Licey and Escogido meet each other.

Summer: the academies and the Dominican Summer League
When the winter league is long over, the major-league clubs' own teams take the field. Every one of the 30 major-league organisations fields at least one team in the Dominican Summer League, the rookie-level league where the clubs' youngest signings play. The 2026 season opened on 1 June and runs from June to mid-August, with games played at the clubs' training complexes in Boca Chica, Guerra and San Cristóbal, all around Santo Domingo.
This is not stadium baseball. The complexes are working facilities, and whether a visitor can watch on a given day is the club's decision; we found no published rule on admission, so ask before you go. For an owner who spends the summer in Cana Bay with a baseball-mad child, it is still one of the more memorable days out the country offers, and it is combined easily with a night in the capital.
February: the Caribbean Series
The winter-league champion does not stop at the final. It goes on to represent the country at the Caribbean Series, the tournament between the champions of the region's winter leagues. The 2027 edition is scheduled for Hermosillo, in Mexico, from 1 to 7 February 2027, with 5 participating countries. After that, the series is set to move to Miami for three straight editions, in 2028, 2029 and 2030.
For many Poseidonia owners, Miami is closer to home than Hermosillo, and a February trip to watch the Dominican champion there is an easy way to stretch the season. In 2027 the more practical plan is to watch from Cana Bay, where the Dominican crowd follows it closely, in bars, in lobbies and on phones.
Fitting baseball into life at Poseidonia
Poseidonia is planned as a 1,319-residence community in Cana Bay, with more than 20 pools, a gym, a racquet club and a social lounge, and its residents will arrive from many countries. Baseball is one of the few local passions that crosses all of them. A practical year looks like this: a La Romana night game in the winter months, one overnight trip to Santo Domingo for a capital derby, a summer visit to an academy if your family is here in June or July, and the Caribbean Series on a screen in February.
Two cautions. Check the day's start time before you leave, because games move with the weather. And buy tickets through the clubs or at the ballpark rather than from resellers; prices and seating vary by game, and the building does not sell them.
