Marina Cap Cana from Poseidonia: a harbour on the other side of the cape

Published October 19, 2026 8 min read

Marina Cap Cana is the yacht harbour inside Cap Cana, at the southern end of the Punta Cana coast, and from Poseidonia at Cana Bay it is a day out rather than a neighbour. It lies about 21 miles away by road and, more importantly, on a different coast: Poseidonia faces the Atlantic north of Cabo Engaño, the island's eastern tip, while the marina opens onto the Caribbean south of it. This guide covers the drive, why the cape matters on a windy day, how a visitor gets through Cap Cana's gate, and what the marina's best-known tournament asks of the boats that fish it.

How far is Marina Cap Cana from Poseidonia?

Measured on open map data from Poseidonia's map pin, the marina is about 21 miles by road and about 17 miles in a straight line. The route leaves Cana Bay by the Macao–Arena Gorda road, runs south on the Bulevar Turístico del Este past Bávaro, turns onto the airport road, and enters Cap Cana by the avenue that leads down to the port and Boulevard Marino. We give no drive time, because the routing model assumes empty roads and this route passes the airport, which is rarely quiet.

For scale: Poseidonia's own beach is about 5 minutes away and Punta Cana International Airport about 25 minutes, as the development publishes them. The marina is further than both, so a day there is planned, not improvised. Playa Juanillo lies about half a mile from the marina basin, which lets one trip cover the harbour and a swim.

Why does the coast the marina is on matter?

Because the island turns a corner between the two. Cabo Engaño, the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, sits between Cana Bay and Cap Cana. Poseidonia lies north-west of it, on the shore that the national emergency bulletins call the Atlantic coast, running from Cabo Engaño to Montecristi. The marina lies south-west of it, on the stretch the same bulletins call the Caribbean coast, from Isla Saona to Cabo Engaño. Swell and wind can treat the two sides differently, and the authorities draw their warnings coast by coast.

Two dated cases show how. During Hurricane Erin, on 17 August 2025, the meteorological institute advised every vessel to stay in port on both coasts, with waves of 8 to 11 feet possible on the Caribbean side between Parque Nacional del Este and Cabo Engaño, and the emergency centre banned the use of beaches along the Atlantic coast. On 15 March 2026, by contrast, it ordered small and medium craft to stay in port on the Caribbean coast alone. A calm morning at Cana Bay therefore says little about whether boats are leaving Cap Cana: read the day's bulletin for the marina's coast before you drive.

  1. 17 August 2025 Hurricane Erin passes to the north-east Vessels are advised to stay in port on both coasts; beaches on the Atlantic coast are closed to use.
  2. 19 August 2025 The Atlantic beach ban is lifted Water sports are allowed again close to the shore.
  3. 15 March 2026 A Caribbean-only order Small, medium and fragile craft are kept in port from Isla Saona to Cabo Engaño, the marina's coast.

How do you get into Cap Cana as a visitor?

Cap Cana is a gated community, and the marina is inside it. A Poseidonia owner is a visitor there, not a resident, so the gate is the first step of the day. Travel writers describe the routine for visitors heading to Juanillo, the beach beside the marina: tell security at the main gate where you are going and register, usually by showing or leaving a photo ID. The community's own access rules let an owner inside Cap Cana register a guest in advance, in writing, with the guest's full name, a copy of their identity document, the destination and how long the pass should last; the guest then receives a digital ticket that serves as the pass.

If you are going out on a boat, the charter usually settles the question, since the marina's own booking form already asks for a passport or cédula number. If you are going for lunch or a walk along the docks, ask the restaurant or the marina how visitors are admitted that day. On the beach itself, the tourism ministry restated in August 2026 that public beaches are free to access, while hotels and clubs may keep their pools, furniture and restaurants for their clients.

What does the Cap Cana Classic involve?

It is the marina's catch-and-release billfish tournament, and the 2025 edition, fished on 10 and 11 October, was its 21st. Thirty boats registered, in separate sonar and non-sonar categories. Every fish counts only if it is released alive, scored at 300 points for a blue marlin and 100 for a white marlin or a sailfish. An angler has two hours to bring a hooked billfish to release, and three judges review video at the end of each day: the clip has to show the species, the angler's colour band and face, and the leader in hand. Boats return to the marina after each day's fishing, and the awards were presented on the marina's esplanade.

For a spectator from Cana Bay, the boats coming back in the late afternoon are the thing to see. Dates move from year to year, and the published 2026 dates differ between the marina's own calendar and press coverage, so check the marina's tournament page before planning a trip around it.

What is at the marina when you are not fishing?

The marina lists more than 150 slips for yachts of up to 250 feet, with a fuel dock and customs and immigration facilities, which makes it a working harbour first. Around it are restaurants and shops, including gift shops the marina lists for beachwear, souvenirs, Dominican rum, coffee and tobacco, and Playa Juanillo is about half a mile from the basin. Tenants change, so we name none of them.

A day from Poseidonia can therefore stand on its own without a boat: the drive south, a walk along the docks as the charter fleet comes in, lunch, and an afternoon on the beach next door, with the same 21 miles home.

What does the marina add to owning at Poseidonia?

A sea day on the other coast, rather than anything at home. Poseidonia is a pre-construction development of 1,319 residences at Cana Bay, priced from the high $170,000s, with delivery projected for 2028, set on the Hard Rock Golf Club's Jack Nicklaus course and with the Cana Bay beach club about 5 minutes away. Its published amenities include no boat slip and no marina. A berth, if you want one, is agreed with the marina itself.

What the marina does give an owner or a guest is the Caribbean side of the island within a day trip: charters, the tournament season and Juanillo's calmer water, about 21 miles from a home on the Atlantic coast. On a day when the bulletins split the two coasts, that difference is worth knowing before anyone sets out.
